Race Day Playlist: Columbus Marathon

For the Columbus Marathon, I am wearing an iPod Shuffle, which I plan to actually shuffle, so the order of these rad tunes doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that every song was chosen with care, some of them with special people in mind. It really helps for me to connect with my people during a marathon because they remind me of why I’m able to run in the first place.

I only have 3 hours and 40 minutes of music here, so I’ll need the Shuffle to recycle the tunes for an extra half hour or so. I’m confident the music will keep flowing, and I won’t lose my mind in the process. If I do lose my mind, the music won’t matter anyway.

Wish me luck, Angels! It’s been three years since I’ve run a full marathon, and while I’m an expert at planning, we all know the marathon can take before it gives. Here’s hoping that my random-ass music mix can keep me distracted and focused, all at the same time. — Amie

Race Day Playlist: Chicago Marathon

Here it is!

To be honest, I’m not 100 percent thrilled with this playlist; I’ve tinkered with order and songs so much, it’s sort of ridiculous. But considering that I’m over-stressed and over-analyzing every single thing about this marathon, it’s not too surprising.

What is surprising is the huge response I received for my song-for-a-donation deal, which helped me raise $1,562.40 for the American Cancer Society. What what!!!

Thanks so much to everyone for their donations and support. Let’s do this. — Mags

Playlist stats: 66 songs (22 from my generous ACS team donors), 4:07:14 total time

Playlist notes:

  • Names in parentheses are my donors. (As part of our deal, they get credit on the blog!)
  • My mom sucks at picking running songs. Our actual conversation:

“What the hell, Mom?”

(Laughs) “That’s what your father said. ‘That’s the worst song you could pick for running!'”

“I have to agree with him, Mom.”

“Well, put it at the beginning when you’re trying to go slower.”

“And when the crowds are so loud that I can’t really hear it.”

(Laughs)

  • I’ve got about 30 minutes of extra music (assuming I hit my goal), which I recommend for anyone who’s making a marathon playlist. Read some of my other tips here.

Race Day Playlist: Bix 7 2014

For last year’s Bixtivities, Maggie and I compiled a dual playlist of guilty pleasures, and it was seven miles of pure ear candy. How could we possibly top it this year? Well this year, my friends, we were inspired by Jock Jams.

I dusted off my trusty ol’ CD case, found these relics and toiled over which cheesy awesomeness would and wouldn’t make the cut. I can’t wait to run up Brady Street to “Llllllllet’s get ready to rummmblllllle!” blaring in my earbuds. My 15-year-old self is giddy with joy. — Aidz

150 Running Songs

We’ve been doing this blog for three-plus years, and that also means we’ve been posting Running Songs of the Week for three-plus years. In fact, our first post ever was a RSotW, “Say It” by the Beastie Boys, less than a week after they released their final album. (RIP MCA.)

So now I’ve done you a solid and compiled all 150 RSotW in one place. It’s about 8 hours of music, or roughly enough to fill two marathon playlists.
